If you have problems, read the notes about using Web Start,
and note the system requirements
If you're interested in making modifications to VASL, you must first install the VASSAL Engine, then install VASL locally. Launch VASSAL, hit the Play Module (or Edit Module) button, and select the lib/VASL.jar file from the VASL installation.
New in version 5.6:
- Broken unit inventory window for easy RPh resolution. (See "Malf/Broken Units" in the Help menu)
- New counter to support MMP-published campaign games
- New CG permieter markers
- Counter fixes: Russian tanks, US 747 and 125, German trucks
Version 5.0 is the best-looking version of VASL ever. Kenn Monte, Ken Knudsen, and Zoltan Grose have replaced
the entire 1/2" OB of every nationality and the guns and vehicles are coming nationality-by-nationality. Jeff Malter has reorganized the counters panel and enhanced the functionality of the pieces with many time-saving conveniences.
VASL 5.0 will read games saved by VASL 4.x, if you have the VASL4.mdx extension installed. It's installed automatically when you run VASL 5.0. Pick an empty directory for extensions when prompted, and specify that directory in the 'Extensions' tab of the preferences.
Boards and Overlays
If you don't have them already, you will also need the boards and overlays.
Scenarios
The Scenario Setup Archive
is a collection of setup files containing the board
configuration and initial forces of published scenarios.
Note that information about Victory Conditions, SSR, etc.,
have been left out, so you still need the printed scenario card
to play.
Extensions
A wide variety of optional extensions have been created by enterprising users to enhance VASL in one way or another. A good listing can be found here. To install, simply place the extension files (unzip first if necessary) into the Extensions folder specified in the VASL preferences.
